Dear Garfield Families,

As the holiday season approaches and we close out the year, we at Garfield Elementary want to extend our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones.  We want to pause and share our heartfelt gratitude with our students and families. Every day, you inspire us with your collaboration, support, and the happiness you bring to our school community. Garfield truly is a remarkable place, made extraordinary by the incredible students, families, and community members who call it home. We are so proud and grateful to be part of this journey together—there’s no place quite like Garfield in all of FCPS!

As you head into the winter break season, we recognize that many students will transition from a rigorous school day to a quieter, calmer home environment. Today’s students often have busier schedules than ever before, so we encourage you to help them discover the value of rest, reflection, and stillness.

That being said, we know that many of you may also want to support continued learning during the break. We would like to remind you of one valuable Garfield resource and two new FCPS webpages that may be helpful.

  1.  FCPS Winter Break Resources - This is a webpage for the winter break that provides resources (academic and non-academic) to families during break.
  2. Winter Activities - This webpage on the FCPS website provides less structured and more creative ideas for students to engage in as a family.

We hope these resources are helpful. Have a happy, peaceful, and beautiful winter break!

Blessings and Joy,

Mrs. Peerman and Ms. Mannning

Garfield ES and the main office will be closed during Winter Break.

From December 23, 2024, to Friday, January 3, 2025, Garfield, and the main office will be closed, with the exception of previously scheduled community events. Any messages will be returned when school reopens on Monday, January 6, 2025.

The Cost of Absenteeism in Elementary School

Chronic absenteeism—missing 10% or more of school, or 8 days by this point in the year—serves as an early warning sign that students are at risk of not reading proficiently by the end of third grade, struggling academically in middle school, and potentially dropping out of high school.

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

As we enter 2025, we urge you to make a resolution to support full-time attendance. Consistency is key to your child’s academic success!

Together, let’s make everyday count! Considerations for Technology

This holiday seasons may involve gifts for some families. Some of those gifts may be technology related. As a reminder, the FCPS SRR states: Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day.

Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. If your student is getting a smartwatch over break, please consider reviewing this website on School Mode to set your student up for success.

Speaking of Technology…
Apps Good for the Brain

Screen time is hard to avoid completely these days… but why not choose apps that are fun AND educational? Here’s a sampling of some free or almost free apps you may want to consider that are reviewed by trusted sources. However, as always, we suggest monitoring your children as they try them out. Enjoy!

  • SimplePhysics lets you design complex structures for everything from tree houses to Ferris wheels and then simulates your design with a sophisticated physics engine.
  • Unblock Me is a puzzle app similar to RushHour. The goal is to move the red block off the board by sliding the other blocks out of the way in the least amount of moves.
  • Math BINGO has 5 different types: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and mixed, and there are 3 levels of difficulty, avatars, and rewards.
  • codeSpark is a learn-to-code app for kids with hundreds of activities and games designed to introduce kids to STEAM and teach them the fundamentals of computer science.
  • The Foolish King is a fictional and magical explanation of the origin of the game of chess as well as an introduction to the game.
  • Khan Academy Kids from the hugely popular online educational site Khan Academy, the app for kids has thousands of educational games, books, and activities.

December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Heather Jenkins, [email protected] no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Heather Jenkins, [email protected]

Full-Time Referral Form (PDF)

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

Dear Garfield Elementary Families,

What a wonderful week it has been at our school!

First, a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Winter Fun Night on Thursday. It was incredible to see so many families enjoying fireside stories, creating festive crafts, and building gingerbread houses. The laughter and joy in the air truly captured the magic of the season. We are so grateful for your participation and for making this event such a success.

Today, we were thrilled to host an assembly by Coastal Wilds Mobile Zoo, where students had the chance to meet fascinating wildlife up close! It was an educational experience that left everyone amazed. Ask your student which animal they enjoyed best!  Thank you to Coastal Wilds for bringing the wonders of nature to our school and inspiring curiosity in our students.

As we head into December, it’s important to emphasize the value of consistent attendance. Every day of learning matters, and being present helps your child stay engaged, connected, and on track for success. Let’s make the most of this time before the holiday break!

Thank you for your continued support and for helping make Garfield a place where learning and community come together!

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

4th Graders Visit Jamestown

Dear Garfield Families,

The holiday season is here, and we’re so grateful for our incredible Garfield community!

We’re excited to invite you to our Winter Fun Night on December 5th, featuring hot cocoa, cookies, crafts, games, a photo booth, and fireside reading! To help us plan for a wonderful evening, please RSVP HERE - Garfield's Winter Fun Family Night!  Your response will ensure we have enough supplies and treats for everyone to enjoy!

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting a Thanksgiving Luncheon with our parents, and it was truly a special occasion. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school community, share a meal, and express our gratitude for the continued support and partnership of our families. As we move into the holiday season, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to be part of such a caring and supportive school family.

Our fourth graders recently visited historic Jamestown Settlement. They explored the challenges of early settlers and their interactions with Native American communities, bringing history to life. Ask your fourth grader about their favorite part—it’s sure to spark a great conversation!

Blessings and Joy,

We are so thankful for the joy your children bring to our school each day and for the trust you place in us to help them learn and grow. Garfield wouldn’t be the special place it is without each of you.

As we head into the final months of 2024, let’s continue to support one another and remain #GarfieldStrong!  On behalf of Garfield ES, we wish you a Thanksgiving filled with love, connection, and moments to enjoy with family and friends.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

National Family Engagement Month

This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.

FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.

Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

If you have questions or would like more information, connect with our Family Liaison, Melody Wheatley, [email protected] or visit FCPS’ website for a list of region representatives.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

National School Lunch Week

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus

rDear Garfield Community,

Welcome to October! As we lean into the last few weeks of first quarter, we want to share the importance of your continued engagement in your child’s education. Your involvement is crucial to their success, and we provide numerous opportunities for you to connect with school and stay informed about your child’s learning journey.

On October 16th, we invite you to our Parent Coffee!  You will have a chance to learn more about our new literacy curriculum, and resources to navigate school success.  Did you sign-up for a parent-teacher conference?  We cannot wait to meet with you about your student’s learning journey and what we’ve accomplished during the first quarter.  If you haven’t already, please ask your student’s teacher about a time to meet!

We want you to remain informed parents and caregivers regarding your child’s school experience, and we encourage you to ask questions, attend parent-teacher conferences, participate in our PTA, frequent family engagement nights, and simply be present throughout the year. Your partnership is invaluable, and we are grateful for your collaboration!

Blessings and Joy!

Mrs. Peerman and Ms. Manning

Everyday Counts at Garfield!

At Garfield Elementary, we believe that every single day matters when it comes to your child’s success. To ensure transparency and celebrate our progress, we will regularly share attendance data in our newsletter.

By highlighting this important information, we aim to keep our families informed and energized about our collective efforts to reduce absenteeismAs of today, Garfield’s absenteeism rate is at 7.9%.  Our goal is to keep it under 15% and even 10% if possible.  Be sure to send your child to school when healthy and help us continue to decrease our overall percentage of students who are considered chronically absent (as a reminder, chronic absenteeism is missing 10% or more of days in a school year, regardless of excused or unexcused).

When students attend school consistently, they have more opportunities to learn, engage with peers, and develop the skills required to succeed.  We thank you for prioritizing your child's education and for partnering with us each day. Together, let’s make every day count!

🗓️ Attendance Tip:
Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow.

📚 Social Studies Basal
Resources Review

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.

All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Our final goal is Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation. We are preparing our students for a future that has yet to be imagined. We must give them the skills they will need to succeed. Watch this video to see students exploring and preparing for careers through Career and Technical Experience programs. See how Goal 5 is being put into practice.

Meet Garfield’s Student Services/Wellness Team!

Janet Dougherty – School Counselor - [email protected]
Cindy Diaz – Social Worker - [email protected]
Dana Mattioli – School Psychologist - [email protected]

It’s been a great start to the school year! As we continue forward, we want to share ways how our Garfield Student Services/Wellness Team can be a resource for you!  Contact our amazing team with any questions or concerns!

School Counselors help set the foundation for students to become confident, successful learners by working closely with teachers, parents, and the community. Counselors focus on education, prevention, and early intervention, addressing social and emotional issues to help students succeed academically, explore career possibilities, and develop essential life skills. We support student through: Classroom Lessons, Group Counseling, Individual Counseling, Collaboration, Consultation, etc.

School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals who can assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic, and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling. School social workers help to meet academic potential, competence and confidence especially where home, school and community collaboration is the key to achieving student success.

School psychologists help support the academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and mental health needs of students. They utilize a range of evidence-based assessment, intervention, and consultation strategies to help students overcome challenges, develop their strengths, and achieve success in the classroom and beyond. As members of various student support teams, they collaborate with staff and families to facilitate access to learning, support positive behaviors, and enhance mental health and wellness.

Behavior Resource Teacher helps students by working with teachers to support positive behavior in the classroom. They collaborate with teachers to create and use effective strategies for student needs, help with behavior plans, and provide support during challenging situations. Additionally, they work directly with students when they struggle with behavior, helping them find positive ways to manage their emotions and actions. They also assist in building strong student-teacher relationships and ensure that behavior programs work well for everyone.

Blue Star Welcome Week

Blue Star Welcome Week is a nationwide initiative to ensure military families feel a sense of belonging to their school communities. Fairfax County Public Schools will intentionally celebrate and acknowledge Blue Star Welcome Week.

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS helped ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections.

At Garfield, we proudly display our Blue Star tree in the main office window, showcasing the names of our active-duty military students. We've also prepared goodie bags and sent warm welcoming messages to these families. On Friday, September 27, we invite all staff and students to wear blue and gold to show their support for our military students.

A special thank you goes to Mrs. Wheatley, our dedicated parent liaison, for her incredible efforts in coordinating our events. Your hard work makes a difference—thank you, Mrs. Wheatley!

Gun Safety and Safe Gun Storage

Providing students and staff with a safe educational environment remains our priority. Sadly, gun violence continues to impact schools and communities across our nation.

In FCPS, lessons on gun safety are built into our curriculum. It is critical that parents and guardians talk to their children about the importance of gun safety and safe gun storage in their homes, and in any home they may visit.

The FCPS website has gun safety resources as well as detailed information about safety and security practices at schools. See Dr. Reid’s recent letter to the community for more resources.

Safely Store Firearms and Medications

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board has a limited supply of free locking medication boxes and trigger locks that fit a wide variety of firearms. Visit the Lock and Talk website to learn more.

Upcoming Events

October 3 - Rosh Hashanah (Holiday) October 4 - Teacher Workday (No School) Shoes That Fit!

You may have noticed that your Garfield Eagle(s) came home with new shoes earlier this week! Thanks to the national nonprofit Shoes That Fit and their annual partnership with GEICO, Garfield ES was selected to receive brand-new, name-brand athletic shoes for our students as part of their back-to-school campaign. It was truly a special day for our Eagles!

While some of the larger sizes ran out during the event, rest assured that if your child didn’t receive a pair, we will get shoes to them soon!

We’d love your help in expressing our gratitude. If your child is able, please encourage them to write a thank-you note or draw a picture for Shoes That Fit and GEICO. Notes can be submitted to the front office, and we’ll make sure they’re delivered to the organization.

Thank you for helping us show our appreciation—it was a wonderful day for our school!

Shoes  That Fit Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional Learning

FCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.

After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.

Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Janet Dougherty, our school counselor, at [email protected], to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia.

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to Garfield's front office or emailed directly to Sarah Rothman - [email protected]

Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided to the front office, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:

  • A health care provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations.
  • A health care provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.
  • A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with their religious tenets or practices.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

Critical and Creative Thinking in Steam!

Hello Garfield Families!

We've had a fantastic week at Garfield! Our teachers and students are settling into the new school year, building classroom communities, establishing routines, making new friends, and diving into learning. It’s been inspiring to see the engagement and energy in every classroom!

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to Back to School Night on Thursday, September 19th, from 5 to 7:10 PM. This event is a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to visit classrooms and learn more about the wonderful things happening at school. The evening is designed for adults to connect with their child’s teachers and we will have dedicated spaces with activities to keep kids busy while you meet with the teachers. Plus, we’ll wrap up the evening with pizza in the cafeteria.

3 Hour Early Release Day Reminder

As a reminder, our first 3-hour early release day is on Monday, September 16th. Most of our students will go home during the three-hour early release. However, if you need childcare, supervision is available, as needed. We need each family to fill out the link below so that we know if your student is staying at school or going home during the 3-hour early release: Early Release Monday Survey Form

Attendance Matters

Finally, we want to emphasize the importance of regular attendance. Your child's education is greatly impacted by their presence in school. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is in class each day.

Regular attendance is crucial for:

  • Academic Success: Students who miss school often struggle to keep up with their classmates.
  • Social Development: Being in school helps students build relationships and develop important social skills.
  • Habit Formation: Developing a strong work ethic and routine starts with consistent attendance.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child's attendance, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher or the school office.

Thank you again for your continued support and we hope you have an amazing weekend.

Mrs. Peerman, Principal

Ms. Manning, Assistant Principal

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit our website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

🍽️Fueling Student Success: New Food Options Cooked up at FCPS

Students will have more than a dozen new options for lunch and breakfast in school cafeterias  starting this week. New menu items were either favorites at last year’s food show — including Korean BBQ wings, sweet Thai chili wings, chicken tikka masala, and barbacoa street tacos — or were tested with student focus groups and tastings.

View school menus to see all the new options and when they will become available.

✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, Empowered

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services' updates to lunch menus align with FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal #2 - Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered. The new menu options reflect the many voices and cultures represented around every FCPS lunch table!

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

As part of the second goal, we want each and every student to feel like they belong and have the support they need to thrive. See how Goal 2 is being put into practice.

SEL SCREENER NOTIFICATION

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) believes in supporting social and emotional learning (SEL) for all students. In FCPS, students use a tool called the SEL Screener to think about their own SEL skills and experiences at school. Garfield students in grades 3-6 will be participating in the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener in the Fall and Spring. The SEL screener will be administered October 9 – October 31 (fall window) and March 10 – March 28 (spring window). The screener will be administered online by the classroom teacher.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information about the SEL Screener, including information on opting out (via form or the Parent Digital Consent System), please view the letter that went home in your child’s Thursday folder today. If you give your permission, no further action is necessary.

You can also learn more on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
