Ramadan

Garfield ES Ramadan Participation Form - 2025

As Ramadan approaches, we want to be mindful of our students who may be observing this holy month. We understand that fasting during Ramadan can impact students' energy levels and routines.

If your child would prefer to spend lunch time in a quiet space away from the cafeteria (considering prayer or fasting), please let us know by filling out this  Garfield ES Ramadan Participation Form - 2025. We wish all our families observing Ramadan a blessed and peaceful month.

Ramadan begins at sundown on Friday, February 28. This day is an evening-only observance day. There is school on these days, but certain activities that cannot be made up can not take place after school. See the complete school year calendar.

Meal Kits: This year students who are fasting can take meal kits home at the end of the day.  Families will need to fill out a weekly Fasting Meals Request Form for their child or children to receive school meal kits. A separate form must be filled out for each week and each student. To receive meal kits for Friday, February 28, and the week of March 3, please submit the first request form by Monday, February 24.

We understand that Ramadan is a time of great significance for our Muslim families, and we are committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Daylight Saving Begins
(Spring Forward)

Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m., daylight saving time begins. Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour! As a result of the time change, many students will be walking to school or to bus stops in the dark. Help your child stay safe by having them wear reflective clothing and bright or light colors, or add reflective items to their backpacks or clothes. Also, encourage your child to be especially alert for cars that are turning or backing up and not to run into the street or cross between parked cars.

Protect Yourself and Our Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage for guidance on when your child should go to school.

  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.

Parents/guardians are encouraged to plan ahead by scheduling an appointment with their child’s health care provider now to avoid the rush this summer. If your child does not have a health care provider, please visit the FCPS Immunizations Resource page to find out where to get an immunization.

Please review the Virginia Department of Health Information Packet for more information on rising 7th grade immunization requirements.

Give Your Kids a Strong Start:
Apply for Early Childhood Education Program

FCPS Pre-K and Early Head Start programs provide a high-quality early learning experience for qualifying children with economic and educational risk factors ages 6 weeks to 4 years living in Fairfax County.

Pre-K prioritizes 4-year-old applicants but also accepts applications for children 3 years old by September 30. Early Head Start is located at three elementary schools — Clearview, Crestwood, and Dogwood — and accepts applications from expectant mothers and for children 6 weeks to 2 years old.

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, however, space is limited and provided based on need, not “first come, first serve.” Applications are accepted online, by email, by postal mail, or in person at our office at 7423 Camp Alger Avenue, Falls Church, Virginia 22042.

If you have a question about the application process or status, please call 703-208-7900 (English) or 703-208-7901 (Spanish).

🗣️ Preparing for Tough Conversations With Teens

Discussing tough topics like fentanyl and other drugs can feel challenging — no matter how close you are with your child. Explain to your teen that it’s important to learn about fentanyl so they know what to do if a friend overdoses. Prepare in advance with the tips below:

  • Set the stage. Choose a casual environment that’s free from distractions. Talk while driving, taking a walk, or doing chores together.
  • Make it a two-way discussion. Ask open-ended questions.
  • Stay patient and reserve judgment.
  • Check in with your child early and often.

📖 Supporting Academic Growth and Reading on Level by Third Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Advertised Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan

Across FCPS, teachers, staff, parents, and even older students are invested in helping our youngest learners grow their love of reading from a strong foundation.

The goal is for students to move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” by the end of the third grade. Reading on grade level is connected to other Strategic Plan goals, including completing advanced coursework and graduating on time.

Last fall, FCPS introduced a new reading curriculum that emphasized the science of reading. Between fall and winter, reading screener results show more than a 4% increase in the number of students in kindergarten to third grade approaching or meeting expectations. Similarly, 3.4% more third graders demonstrate strong foundations of reading and 8.4% more third graders are mastering grade-level standards.

Discover how an elementary school employs a science-based approach, including phonics, to supercharge students' reading.

🗣️ Connect With Your Kids: Simple Steps to Stronger Communication

Teens skip things that don't interest them, including lectures from their parents. How do you connect with your children and really know what's going on in their lives? How can you become “unskippable”?

Effective communication can build trust and understanding, but it takes thought, planning, and effort.

The latest Healthy Minds Blog offers practical strategies to improve communication and build strong, lasting relationships:

  • Ditch distractions and create a safe space where your child feels comfortable opening up.
  • Listen actively and validate their feelings, even if you don't agree.
  • Ask "how" questions instead of "what" questions to get them talking about their experiences.

For more tips and techniques, read the full article on the Healthy Minds Blog, which shares information related to youth mental health and wellness.

VDH Immunization Packets for Rising 7th Graders

As required by the Code of Virginia, parents or legal guardians need to provide proof of immunizations for their child to attend public school. All students entering seventh grade are required to receive one dose of each of the following immunizations:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis booster (Tdap) given at age 7 or older.
  • Meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) given at age 10 or older.
  • A complete series of 2 doses of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
  • After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parents/guardians sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine.

Mrs. Dougherty, Our Amazing School Counselor

At Garfield School, we’re truly blessed,
With a counselor who is simply the best.
Mrs. Dougherty, so kind and true,
Always here to help us through.

She listens closely, shows she cares,
Guiding us through joys and fears.
With warmth and wisdom, day by day,
She helps us find a brighter way.

She teaches us to connect and grow,
To protect our hearts, to respect and show—
That kindness matters, words hold weight,
And being our best is never too late.

So here’s our THANK YOU, big and bright,
For all you do, your guiding light!

Learn More About How Your Child Feels at School

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

Every Day Counts at Garfield! Help us reach our goal of 6% absenteeism or less this year!

At Garfield Elementary, our goal is to keep chronic absenteeism WAY below 15% because attendance directly impacts student success. Fairfax County Public Schools tracks this to ensure students are in school regularly, building strong academic foundations and social connections.

When too many students miss school frequently, it affects learning, resources, and overall school performance.  We are working hard to encourage regular school attendance.

We love having your children at school all year--however, our chronic absenteeism numbers are rising--which means we are missing many students! ❄️ Winter weather, illnesses, and other challenges, can make it hard to get to school, but daily attendance is key to helping students stay engaged and connected.

Here are some steps to keep our Garfield Eagles healthy and in school:

  1. Have backup plans for getting your children to school.
  2. If your child is sick, consult with the school nurse or a medical provider.
  3. If anxiety is a concern, talk to your child’s teacher, nurse, or counselor.
  4. Encourage good hygiene habits like handwashing.
  5. Dress your children warmly for the cold weather.
  6. Promote healthy habits like sleep, nutritious foods, and exercise.

We are here to support you! If you need help, resources, or advice, call us at 703-923-2900. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our students healthy and in school!

Together, let’s make every day count! Make Sure Your Children
Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!

FCPS Proposed Budget Progress

The Fairfax County School Board discussed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at their work session on February 4. They discussed details regarding student enrollment and investments in students requiring additional support, market comparison data for surrounding school divisions, and an update on progress toward achieving the Baldrige Award for Performance Excellence. Baldrige is a framework used to assess and improve organizational performance across various sectors, including education.

The School Board also held a public hearing on the FY 2026 Proposed Budget on Tuesday, February 4, where they invited the community to share their feedback on the budget.

On Tuesday, February 18, the Fairfax County executive will present the county’s Advertised Budget, and the Fairfax County School Board will hold a work session on the FCPS FY 2026 Proposed Budget. View FCPS’ Budget Development Calendar.

Breaking Down the Budget

More than 85% of the budget is dedicated to instruction and reflects the needs of our community’s young people in response to the changing world around us. Budget priorities include providing competitive compensation for all employees, including a 7% salary increase for all staff. The majority of the budget increase is dedicated to that proposed 7% pay increase.

Our families want their children in high-quality schools with the best teachers who provide rigorous academic experiences. We must provide competitive compensation to attract and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students.

The proposed 7% salary increase would likely move FCPS to the highest starting salary for teachers with a master's degree among our neighboring counties and greatly improve our recruitment efforts amidst an ongoing teacher shortage. Visit the Budget webpage for more information.

🏅 Advisory Committee for Students With Disabilities Seeks Nominations for First-Class Awards

First-Class Awards are presented each year to individuals who support, design, and/or implement inclusion activities that result in positive outcomes for students. The Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) is seeking nominations for the 2025 First-Class Awards. This is a great opportunity for the community to recognize and celebrate the inclusion efforts of educators, administrators, and students who demonstrate the inclusion of students with disabilities in all facets of education.

Nominees should model excellence in their role relative to special education, have a positive impact that benefits disabled and non-disabled students alike, and be committed to creating an inclusive environment and mindset.

Nominate an administrator, staff member, student, or community partner who has made an exceptional contribution to inclusive practices in Fairfax County Public Schools. Nominations close Wednesday, February 19.

This is a great resume-building opportunity, and students can earn service hours as well. Students may share their work in a share-fair environment using posters, essays, videos, songs, or art. They will interact with attendees through conversations about their work, ideas, and efforts to foster inclusivity in school communities.

Students must use this Google Form to participate by Monday, February 17. A list of possible projects is also on the form. More information will be provided after the student’s submission is received. Please contact Manuel Gomez Portillo with any questions.

📈VA SOL Summary Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

Proposed Budget Presented to School Board

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid presented the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at the School Board meeting on Thursday, January 23. Watch a video of the presentation

As Dr. Reid noted in her January 24 letter to families, “The budget is fiscally responsible and invests in excellence — not just for FCPS, but for all of us in Fairfax County who want a strong community with successful young people, dedicated educators and support staff, and a thriving economy.”

The proposed budget reflects the needs of and FCPS’ commitments to Fairfax County students, families, and community members. It focuses on competitive compensation, including a 7.0% salary increase for all staff to recruit and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students; investing in students who require additional support; and continuing multiyear initiatives such as inclusive preschool and safety and security updates.

Learn more on the Budget webpage.

Garfield’s Next Early Release Day:  February 10th – Feedback Needed

This is our final request for information regarding dismissal plans for the 3-hour early release days this school year. The plans you indicate on this form will apply to the remaining early release dates: February 10, March 10, April 21, and May 12.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Your support helps us ensure a smooth and safe dismissal process for all students.

Action Needed:

Please complete this UPDATED EARLY RELEASE SURVEY FORM to indicate how your child will be going home for the remaining early release days this school year.

*If you have multiple children, please complete a form for each student.

We encourage all parents/caregivers to have their student take their normal route home (SACC, bus, walk, kiss and ride) on early dismissal days. However, if necessary, we will ensure that every student has supervision at the school and returns home at the regular time if that is what works best for your family.

FCPS is offering no-cost student supervision for families with unique childcare needs. Students will be supervised by FCPS school-based staff, substitute teachers, and central office staff.  For more information, please visit:

https://www.fcps.edu/family-resources/safety-and-transportation/limited-early-release-mondays

Thank you for your cooperation and partnership in ensuring smooth dismissal procedures for our early release days!

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

Winter Assessments

FCPS uses a variety of academic screening, growth, and diagnostic tests to identify students' academic strengths and needs and to monitor growth in their learning across the school year. These assessments fulfill state requirements for screening and growth measures in addition to providing data to develop student reading plans or student intervention plans, as needed. Additional diagnostic tests are available as a resource for teachers when more information is needed to determine specific areas for support.

  • These assessments help teachers know each students' areas of strength and need within the content.
  • They also provide data on how each student is growing throughout the year.

Students will participate in a variety of assessments this month. More information about the growth assessments can be found on the FCPS website.

Diagnostic Assessments by Grade Level
  • Pre-K-2nd (select G3) - VALLS
  • Gr 3-6 - iReady Reading
    • Scheduled to be completed by mid January, as results determine if additional diagnostic testing is required.
  • Gr 1-6 - iReady Math
What Families Can Do
to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Get more information on opioid awareness.

📈 Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

Everyday Counts: The Impact of Absenteeism in Elementary Schools

Chronic absenteeism—missing 10% or more of school, or 8 days by this point in the year—serves as an early warning sign that students are at risk of not reading proficiently by the end of third grade, struggling academically in middle school, and potentially dropping out of high school.

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

As we enter 2025, we urge you to make a resolution to support full-time attendance. Consistency is key to your child’s academic success!

Together, let’s make everyday count!

Garfield ES - Eagle Express: Happy Holidays 2024!

English | Español | አማርኛ | 中文 | 한국어 | Tiếng Việt | العربية | فارسی | اردو

Dear Garfield Families,

As the holiday season approaches and we close out the year, we at Garfield Elementary want to extend our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones.  We want to pause and share our heartfelt gratitude with our students and families. Every day, you inspire us with your collaboration, support, and the happiness you bring to our school community. Garfield truly is a remarkable place, made extraordinary by the incredible students, families, and community members who call it home. We are so proud and grateful to be part of this journey together—there’s no place quite like Garfield in all of FCPS!

As you head into the winter break season, we recognize that many students will transition from a rigorous school day to a quieter, calmer home environment. Today’s students often have busier schedules than ever before, so we encourage you to help them discover the value of rest, reflection, and stillness.

That being said, we know that many of you may also want to support continued learning during the break. We would like to remind you of one valuable Garfield resource and two new FCPS webpages that may be helpful.

  1.  FCPS Winter Break Resources - This is a webpage for the winter break that provides resources (academic and non-academic) to families during break.
  2. Winter Activities - This webpage on the FCPS website provides less structured and more creative ideas for students to engage in as a family.

We hope these resources are helpful. Have a happy, peaceful, and beautiful winter break!

Blessings and Joy,

Mrs. Peerman and Ms. Mannning

Garfield ES and the main office will be closed during Winter Break.

From December 23, 2024, to Friday, January 3, 2025, Garfield, and the main office will be closed, with the exception of previously scheduled community events. Any messages will be returned when school reopens on Monday, January 6, 2025.

Together, let’s make everyday count! Considerations for Technology

This holiday seasons may involve gifts for some families. Some of those gifts may be technology related. As a reminder, the FCPS SRR states: Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day.

Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g., smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g., texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. If your student is getting a smartwatch over break, please consider reviewing this website on School Mode to set your student up for success.

Speaking of Technology…
Apps Good for the Brain

Screen time is hard to avoid completely these days… but why not choose apps that are fun AND educational? Here’s a sampling of some free or almost free apps you may want to consider that are reviewed by trusted sources. However, as always, we suggest monitoring your children as they try them out. Enjoy!

  • SimplePhysics lets you design complex structures for everything from tree houses to Ferris wheels and then simulates your design with a sophisticated physics engine.
  • Unblock Me is a puzzle app similar to RushHour. The goal is to move the red block off the board by sliding the other blocks out of the way in the least amount of moves.
  • Math BINGO has 5 different types: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and mixed, and there are 3 levels of difficulty, avatars, and rewards.
  • codeSpark is a learn-to-code app for kids with hundreds of activities and games designed to introduce kids to STEAM and teach them the fundamentals of computer science.
  • The Foolish King is a fictional and magical explanation of the origin of the game of chess as well as an introduction to the game.
  • Khan Academy Kids from the hugely popular online educational site Khan Academy, the app for kids has thousands of educational games, books, and activities.

At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Heather Jenkins, [email protected]

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

Dear Garfield Elementary Families,

What a wonderful week it has been at our school!

First, a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Winter Fun Night on Thursday. It was incredible to see so many families enjoying fireside stories, creating festive crafts, and building gingerbread houses. The laughter and joy in the air truly captured the magic of the season. We are so grateful for your participation and for making this event such a success.

Today, we were thrilled to host an assembly by Coastal Wilds Mobile Zoo, where students had the chance to meet fascinating wildlife up close! It was an educational experience that left everyone amazed. Ask your student which animal they enjoyed best!  Thank you to Coastal Wilds for bringing the wonders of nature to our school and inspiring curiosity in our students.

As we head into December, it’s important to emphasize the value of consistent attendance. Every day of learning matters, and being present helps your child stay engaged, connected, and on track for success. Let’s make the most of this time before the holiday break!

Thank you for your continued support and for helping make Garfield a place where learning and community come together!

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

4th Graders Visit Jamestown

Dear Garfield Families,

The holiday season is here, and we’re so grateful for our incredible Garfield community!

We’re excited to invite you to our Winter Fun Night on December 5th, featuring hot cocoa, cookies, crafts, games, a photo booth, and fireside reading! To help us plan for a wonderful evening, please RSVP HERE - Garfield's Winter Fun Family Night!  Your response will ensure we have enough supplies and treats for everyone to enjoy!

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting a Thanksgiving Luncheon with our parents, and it was truly a special occasion. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school community, share a meal, and express our gratitude for the continued support and partnership of our families. As we move into the holiday season, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to be part of such a caring and supportive school family.

Our fourth graders recently visited historic Jamestown Settlement. They explored the challenges of early settlers and their interactions with Native American communities, bringing history to life. Ask your fourth grader about their favorite part—it’s sure to spark a great conversation!

Blessings and Joy,

Kerry Peerman

As we enter this season of gratitude, our hearts are full of appreciation for you. The partnership between families and our school is what makes Garfield such an extraordinary place. Together, we’ve created a community rooted in kindness, connection, and care—one that truly feels like family.

We are so thankful for the joy your children bring to our school each day and for the trust you place in us to help them learn and grow. Garfield wouldn’t be the special place it is without each of you.

As we head into the final months of 2024, let’s continue to support one another and remain #GarfieldStrong!  On behalf of Garfield ES, we wish you a Thanksgiving filled with love, connection, and moments to enjoy with family and friends.
